St. George Foundation 1999

Promoting Awareness and Raising Funds

The Saint George Foundation (SGF) is a humanitarian organization composed of dedicated and passionate young individuals with a mission to promote awareness and raise funds for various health related issues.

Since its establishment in 1999, the Saint George Foundation has raised over $ 315,000 in donations for several diseases including Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Crohn’s and Colitis disease, and Autism. Last year’s theme was aimed at fundraising for eye disorders. Due to the great support of our honorable sponsors, the SGF is able to organize an annual GALA that promotes awareness and raises funds on varying themes. Your support have been instrumental in helping those associations that have received our donations.

The Foundation has also been actively contributing to other communities by volunteering at the Old Brewery Mission, holding fundraising events supporting the Cedar's Home for the Elderly and having an Easter Basket Drive to provide families in need with food for the holidays.

The Saint George Foundation mandate for 2010 is to bring awareness to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, aka Lou Gehrig’s disease).

What is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis? ALS is basically a fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects mainly the motor neurons controlling the voluntary motor movements. This disorder can lead to muscle weaknesses and atrophy of the whole body by ceasing progressively the messages sent to the muscles due to denervation. ALS patients suffer from early symptoms such as speech swallowing ,walking difficulty and weaknesses in the hand, foot, arm and leg. Severe symptoms of inability to swallow or to breath will lead eventually to death. The cause is unknown and nearly 3 000 Canadians are living with ALS according to ALS Society of Canada. SGF will be supporting the ALS Society of Quebec this year to help in research towards a cure for ALS, improve quality care for people living with ALS, and build public awareness of ALS across Canada.
